‘Return to Kurdistan’ exhibition
Houses of Parliament, London
May 2016 – October 2017
The touring exhibition ‘Return to Kurdistan’ featured my photographs of Iraqi Kurdistan and Northern Iraq alongside historical images by Anthony Kersting.
My work explores the region’s ancient civilisation, its religious and ethnic diversity, and a history shaped by persecution and renewal, alongside the recent refugee crisis and cultural devastation caused by ISIS. Kersting’s photographs from the 1940s form an important record of minority communities and historic sites that have since been threatened or destroyed.
The exhibition was first shown in the cities of Erbil and Sulaimani in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It was then exhibited at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London and the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at Exeter University, before being shown in the Houses of Parliament, London.
Organised in partnership with Gulan, The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of Exeter and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Kurdistan Region in Iraq.
